The role of a ligament is to attach bone to bone and they are located at every joint in the body. Sprains fall into 3 categories:

Grade 1 - minor sprain involving only a few fibres and producing pain when stressed.

Grade 2 - involving a considerable amount of the fibres, producing pain when stressed and evidence of laxity, which is characterised by excessive movement of the ligament.

Grade 3 - this is defined as a complete tear of the ligament, which is characterised by major laxity with or without pain when the ligament is stressed.

In most cases, ligament sprains can be treated conservatively; however some severe cases require surgical treatment. It is important to undergo treatment as soon as possible as when left untreated the ligament forms scar tissue and the movement of the joint can become restricted. Also, the surrounding musculature is placed under more stress as it has to support the joint, due to the weakness of the supporting ligament, therefore there is a considerable degree of secondary damage.
