Runner’s Knee Pain Fixed

As the weather starts to close in, all runners know, it is the time to start to get out and build your mileage for any serious runs early next year, like London marathon for example…

Usually by December/January Body in Motion is full of runners who have got to around 10-14 mile mark and start to get a few twinges on the side of the knee….Most of them try to “run through the pain” for a few weeks…This never works and only serves to make their knee pain worse requiring the runner to take MORE time off training!

If you get a twinge- I urge you to come in and get it treated- very often, it will only take one or two sessions to fix it….

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), sometimes referred to as Runner’s Knee, is the most common cause of lateral knee pain in runners.

It occurs as a result of poor lower limb biomechanics. It may be caused by many factors such as weakness around the hip, over pronation in the foot or muscle imbalance in the quadriceps muscle.

The main symptom of ITBS is sharp pain or burning on the lateral aspect of the knee.

Causes

The most common causes of ilio-tibial band syndrome include:-

  • Muscle imbalances – particularly quadriceps versus hamstrings
  • Hip abductor weakness – particularly gluteus medius
  • Run/gait style factors – e.g. bow-leggedness, knock knees, excessive pronation
  • Training intensity errors – increasing mileage or intensity too fast

At Body in Motion we carry out a full examination and assessment of your injured area. We may video your running gait on the treadmill if we suspect that is contributing to your pain.
