Runner's Knee
The iliotibial band is a band that comes from the tensor fascia latae muscle situated just below the hip on the outer thigh. The iliotibial band extends down the side of the thigh to attach to the outside of the knee. During certain sports, including repeated knee bending and straightening it causes the iliotibial band to rub over a prominent bony region, named the lateral epicondyle resulting in friction and damage to the iliotibial band.
Iliotibial band friction syndrome is the most common cause of lateral knee pain, which is pain experienced on the outside of the knee. Individuals who are most at risk from this injury are runners, specifically long distance runners, those with biomechanical abnormalities and those who are performing incorrect training techniques.
What are the causes of lateral knee pain?
Usually the cause is related to running technique and poor biomechanics. It is often due to weakness around the pelvis, poor core stability and tightness in the hamstrings.
What is the best treatment?
It is vital to get your Runners Knee correctly diagnosed and treated as sometimes minor problems which could be treated easily sometimes develop into major problems requiring months of rest if left ignored.
