There is so much being written about barefoot running right now.
EVERYONE is either doing it – or thinking about doing it.
Research shows running barefoot is has enormous benefits, is great for your legs, your feet, allows you to run faster and with fewer injuries. It is in fact the “natural way to move”.
I have already discussed in another post the importance of running on your forefoot or midfoot rather than your landing on your heel. Running barefoot, encourages this motion naturally resulting in optimum balance, increased stability, less impact, and greater propulsion. Increased sensory feedback improves agility, strength, and equilibrium allowing the runner to make immediate corrections in their form.
This greatly improves running efficiency.
But barefoot running is painful on my feet?
Shoes are now being sold across the globe that acts like a second skin protecting your feet from from the elements and other nasties on the ground. For our Western sensitive feet this allows us to still have the experience and natural sensation of running barefoot without returning home with damaged skin. It delivers all the health and performance benefits of barefoot running–with less the risk of running injury.
Great so can I just switch across from my normal running shoes?
If you do fancy having a go- make sure you start slowly. Any time you make a change in your biomechanics the muscles, tendons and ligaments need to adapt. There may be a period of one or two weeks where you notice an increase in muscle ache where you are stimulating different muscle activity. So be patient and build up really slowly.
You will notice your posture will improves and many running injuries will disapear.
If you are a pronator, supinator or need motion control shoes- you may be able to wear them gradually but it is best to get a video analysis of your gait with a qualified professional to ensure the shoes are appropriate for you and will not make the problem worse.
I wear orthotics- can I still try these?
These are designed to be worn next to the skin not with orthotics. Get professional advice before throwing away your orthotics.
They can also be used walking, travelling and kiking. As they are super lite, no more chunky, smelly hiking boots to be squeezed in the backpack. This will help with the back pain too!

If you can afford something, anything else, I recommend getting something besides New Balance. They are not known for there durability or support and you will start to feel the effects of this years later as your joints wear out from impact.
